“In the name of God, the most gracious and the most merciful.
From Muhammad (the Messenger of God) to Heraclius (the Emperor of Byzantium), greetings to him who is the proponent of spiritual guidance. I bid you pay heed to the divine call. I am the Messenger of Allah to his people. Ratify Islam for your salvation.”
These are the words of a letter delivered by Muhammad to the Byzantine emperor in 628 A.D.
Through this letter, He invited King Heraculis to embrace Islam.
History also witnessed a lengthy response from Heraclius.
He asked: “Was it just like the same when John the Baptist preached to King Herod, out of the wasteland, wailing about salvation?”
The Holy Prophet (PBUH) sent the same letters to the king of Persia, the patriarch of Alexandria, Muqawqas (Cyrus), and Kesra (Khesro).
He delivered them the same message of Divine salvation and advised them to put faith in no one but Allah.
The account of these letters is the very first scene of the Islamic movie The Message.
The Message is a masterpiece of 1976 that is directed by a Syrian American named Mustapha al-quad. The movie revolves around the life of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) and the times of the 7th century in Mecca. Mecca is a city of great importance in the Muslim community as it is a place where Islam began and most of the altercations took place.
The movie shows how a conflict arose between the Holy Prophet (PBUH) and the injustice incurred by the super leaders of Mecca.
It tells how Holy Prophet (PBUH) fought against bribery, slavery, corruption, and many more social evils incurred by the superpowers of Mecca. This movie depicts the life of Muhammad (PBUH) from receiving the Quran through a series of life events.
The movie avoids portraying the image of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) even though the film centers on the life of Him and uses non-visual methods throughout this film.
Islam forbids portraying the image of major personalities of Islam including the last Prophet of Allah. So, the director did not show the image of the Holy Prophet (PBUH). However, The movie compensates for the absence of images with voice-over narration and dialogue among the Muslims to tell what the Prophet says.
The film is introduced in two versions, Arabic and English. The film got popularity not only in the Arab world but also globally.
The Message movie is renowned as the most prominent visual document on early Islam and the life of Prophet Muhammed (PBUH).
The movie covers the early history of Islam and two major battles of Islamic history, Uhud and Badr.
Muslims won the first battle of Badr but lost the battle of Uhud.
The movie starts with Jibrael (r) revealing the Quranic verses of Allah SWT to the Holy Prophet (PBUH) and it ends up with Muhammad’s time to leave the earth. In the meantime, it also depicts how the companions and followers of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) have to face hardships in their lives.
Quran revealed on Holy Muhammad (PBUH) and it instructed Him to obey no one but Allah. In early Islam, the people of Arabia used to practice polygamy. They used to worship more than 300 Gods. It was very hard for Muhammad (PBUH) to gather the people of Arabia towards salvation before one God.
Muhammad (PBUH) was a person who belongs to the well-known and rich family of Arabia called Quraysh. When Muhammad (PBUH) began to preach the message of Allah, most of the powerful men of his tribe began to rebel against His message.
They did everything to stop Muhammad (PBUH) from preaching Islam. They tried to convince Muhammad (PBUH) to stop preaching the message of God and in return, they will give Him money, power, and everything He want. But He refused everything with dignity and prefer to stay with the truth.
Muhammad (PBUH) continue to preach the divine message of Allah to people with kindness and generosity, no matter how much hate and aggression He faced from His enemies. Muhammad (PBUH) came to succeed in His goal when the biggest enemies like Abu Sufyan and his wife came to accept Islam.
This movie also shows the sweet kind of relationship between Muslims and Non-Muslims. Muhammad (PBUH) preached harmony, equality, and patience between Muslims and Non- Muslims. The example is seen when Muslims were treated so badly in Mecca, that living here in Mecca became a risk for their survival. So, they were compelled to take shelter in Abyssinia and they were treated well there.
Islam is a religion of peace. The producer tried very well to show the true picture of Islam. He proves that it is a religion of peace by highlighting the moments when Muhammad (PBUH) instructed the Muslims of Mecca to migrate to Madina as their lives were in danger. People of Madina show brotherhood to the migrating brothers. They built Mosques in Madina and enjoy the freedom to worship Allah without any pressure.
After gaining a victory in one of the wars, Muhammad (PBUH) peacefully settles the crisis by doing a treaty with the resistance party that they can visit Mecca and practice their religion freely. Even Muslims conduct the pilgrimage in Mecca with Muhammad (PBUH), the year He died.
All the scenes of this movie are cast keeping in view real events. It makes the movie a true picture of Islamic historical incidents at the time of the Holy Prophet (PBUH). All the performers are so good and substantial; the spectacles are so alive.
In the modern world, some extremists claim that they are Muslims and kill people in the name of Islam.
The truth is that Islam is free from such impurities and a religion of peace. Being Muslims, we must portray our religion in its purest form.
Being Muslims, we must defend our religion in the best possible way. Every Muslim should do his part for uplifting the image of Islam that has been damaged by extremists.
To do so, there is a dire need to learn Islamic history, its precious morals, and extraordinary values wholeheartedly.
