Argument & historical context
The movie is based on the Kashmir genocide which, as many disputes in history, originated on territory, in this case between India & Pakistan. In order to give some geographical context, the region of Kashmir is located in the northwestern corner of the Indian subcontinent.
Yet, this conflict is quite complex and it also includes the dispute between India & the People’s Republic of China over the Ladakh region of the same Indian State. What happened is Indians claimed the entire former Dogra princely state of Jammu & Kashmir. Although, they currently administer half the region already including Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, and Siachen Glacier.
India’s claims are controlled by Pakistan, which already possesses a third of Kashmir, most of Azad Kashmir, and the north of Gilgit & Baltistan. On the other hand, China has control over several regions of Kashmir known as Aksai Chin as well as a part of the Karakoram Mountain Range (Shaksgam Valley).
And suddenly this became a genocide when all of the parties started fighting for a bigger piece of cake, starting with India & Pakistan which have fought three wars. The disputes over the territory of Kashmir between these two countries happened in 1947, 1965, and 1999. Later on, in 1962, India & China clashed. Now, how does The Kashmir Files take this to fiction?
The Kashmir Files tackles injustice
The story revolves around Krishna Pandit (Darshan Kumar), a student, who’s told by his grandfather Pushkar Nath (Anupam Kher) that his parents died in an accident. But as you can imagine, that’s not the real story.
The main character finds himself caught between two analog narratives of the Kashmiri Pandit exodus of 1990. One side is represented by his professor who has a lot of support on campus for her Kashmir cause, and the other one is Nath who has struggled for thirty years to get justice over this. According to the professor, Nath’s case is a sham.
Even though this situation can be stressful for the audience (which is the whole point) it does pose a more complex depiction of history. But, where can you watch The Kashmir Files online?

This is a complex movie to watch online for free. Yet, the official online streaming route of the movie started on April 5th through an OTT mediator and its platform Zee. Unfortunately, you won’t find this movie on Hulu, Netflix, HBO Max, or Prime Video.
The movie premiered in cinemas on March 11th, so this means two things.
