By now, you may have heard of the name Anna Delvey AKA Anna Sorokin – the twenty-something-year-old swindler of the rich & elite. Her story has been sensationalized worldwide for the elaborate scam that fooled even the highest of New York’s aristocracy.

Now, the legend of Ana Delvey has been made into a popular series called Inventing Anna. The show is based on a New York magazine investigation into Anna Sorokin/Anna Delvey, who convinced people she was a wealthy European heiress. Is Inventing Anna on Netflix? Here’s what we know.

The fake heiress

The twenty-six-year-old con artist socialite claimed to access a sixty-seven million dollar fortune through her father, pulling the wool over the eyes of friends & acquaintances. The supposed German heiress manipulated her way around obtaining private jet planes,  large sums of money, and well-to-do relationships.

The popularized series Inventing Anna presents the timeline of true events of Sorokin’s charade lasting between the years 2015 & 2017 in Manhattan, New York.

According to the Independent, “At her trial in 2019, Sorokin was found guilty of swindling more than $200,000 (£147,000) from hotels, banks, and other institutions. She scammed further sums of money from associates and friends whom she met under false pretenses.”

The My Girl star Anna Chlumsky portrays real-life journalist Jessica Pressler (Vivian Kent on the series), who interviews Sorokin at Rikers Island while she awaits trial. The Cut, renamed in the series The Manhattan, gives Kent a two-week pass to pursue the story, allowing her to dive into the investigation.

Kent finds out that the fashion ex-intern paraded around New York’s top-caliber social circles claiming to be the daughter of a wealthy solar tycoon, a prude, a promiscuous party girl, and a dedicated girlfriend. So Kent embarks on a wild goose chase interviewing various sources from Anna’s Instagram, only to discover that she knew less about Sorokin than when she started.

A priceless reputation

Vivian Kent convinces Sorokin to reject a plea deal to buy more time to investigate and uncover who Anna Delvey really is. Kent caters to Sorokin’s ego reminding her how valuable a pristine reputation is. Sorokin made a name for herself under the Delvey alias with an irreplaceable prestige; so she agreed that saving face was worth more than a plea deal.

Throughout the trial,  Sorokin does her best to convince the media & Kent that she isn’t a bratty criminal stealing from New York City’s elite. Yet, as Inventing Anna thoroughly displays, her life details didn’t match up.

Sorokin impressed everyone around her, telling varying tales about her background. When people started to catch on that something was amiss, the cat was out of the bag and  Sorokin was convicted on multiple fraud charges in 2019.
