Uncharted: The action-adventure video game series is all set to hit theatres!
Uncharted is based on the Sony/PlayStation popular action-adventure video game series that started with Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune. Uncharted is arguably one of the best-selling, most critically acclaimed video game series of all time. Since 2007, the series, inspired by Indiana Jones, took players on adventures across the world and to the cutting edge of graphics technology.
The movie serves as an origin story for the games’ main protagonist: Nathan Drake, a street-smart thief (played by Tom Holland ) who is recruited by seasoned treasure hunter Victor “Sully” Sullivan (played by Mark Wahlberg) to recover a fortune lost by Ferdinand Magellan over 500 years ago. Uncharted looks set to be an exciting swashbuckling adventure – yes, the race for the greatest treasure is on, only if they can survive each other first!

What starts as a heist job for the duo becomes a globe-trotting, white-knuckle race to reach the prize before the ruthless Moncada (played by Antonio Banderas). Antonio Banderas will have a key role in the movie, playing the villain. There’s no word on whether the Zorro actor’s character previously appeared in the games, though rumors suggest he’s an original creation for the movie. Other key cast members include Truth or Dare’s Sophia Taylor Ali, playing Chloe Frazer, a fellow treasure hunter who was introduced in Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and led the spin-off Uncharted: The Lost Legacy.
Sony has released a second trailer, teasing more of the Uncharted movie, and even featuring Sully with his iconic moustache. There’s also more information on Antonio Banderas’ character, who looks set to battle with his own family legacy as well as Drake.
It’s not a coincidence that Uncharted’s cast is led by actors considerably younger than the video game characters they portray. The movie will be a prequel to the game series, picking up before the events of the first game, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune.
In the early stages of production, Mark Wahlberg, Robert De Niro & Joe Pesci were all slated to be in the movie with David O’Russell directing the film. Since then all three and the director dropped out of the project. The movie has an estimated budget of 120 Million US dollars and is rated PG-13 for violence/action and language.
The first Uncharted movie release date was way back in 2016 – needless to say that it’s been delayed a few times. The movie now is now scheduled to be exclusively in theatres in Premium Large Formats and IMAX on February 18, 2022.
The film is directed by Ruben Fleischer from a screenplay by Rafe Lee Judkins, Art Marcum and Matt Holloway. The film stars Tom Holland, the English actor who is famous for his roles in movies like “Spider-Man: Homecoming” (2017), “Spider-Man: Far from Home” (2019), “Captain America: Civil War” (2016) and “The Impossible” (2012). In the film, Drake’s mentor Victor Sullivan is played by Mark Wahlberg, an American actor, producer, businessman and former rapper who is known for films like “The Fighter” (2010), “Boogie Nights” (1997), “The Departed” (2006) and “Ted” (2012). Other key cast members include Sophia Taylor Ali, Tati Gabrielle and Antonio Banderas in supporting roles.
Where to watch Unchartered Movie?
The movie will be coming to Hulu, Amazon Prime, Roku and Netflix. Thanks to a new deal, Netflix has exclusive rights to stream Sony’s theatrical releases. However, Unchartered won’t be on Netflix at the same time as they are in theaters, but will land on the platform within a two-year period after its theatrical release.
We can expect Unchartered to be much more than treasure hunting, stunning backdrops, and show-stopping explosions. Being a prequel to the game series, the movie Unchartered has a great opportunity to tell its own story, which will be better than a straightforward video game adaptation.
