Marvel’s Eternals is one of the most highly-anticipated films of the year, but also perhaps the most polarizing. Marvel ventured into new territory when they hired art house filmmaker Chloé Zhao to direct their latest blockbuster. Zhao is coming off winning Oscars for Best Director & Best Picture for her 2020 masterpiece Nomadland.
It’s hard to believe that after Nomadland, a neorealist film about economic struggle, Zhao’s next film would be a comic book story. When you watch Eternals however, you can find similarities to Zhao’s previous work. For instance, Eternals features Zhao’s predisposition to showcase vast & craggy panoramas.
Additionally, Eternals is a much more meditative & sober watch than other MCU movies. However, Eternals doesn’t contain the naturalism, empathy, or inventiveness of Zhao’s earlier work. In spite of this, Eternals may be a refreshing watch for those who are tired of the tropes of other Marvel products.
Eternals aims high
From the jump, Eternals attempts to be something it’s not. Some of the best superhero movies recognize the fact that they’re derived from comic book material. On the other hand, Eternals wears its influences on its sleeve. The film begins with a Pink Floyd song over text, followed by some tableau’s that echo Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Compare this avant-garde aesthetic to what Eternals is actually about. The titular characters are ten aliens from the planter Olympia. They’re sent to the Milky Way by a species of giants called Celestials, who’ve been in existence forever. The Eternals come to earth in an attempt to destroy the Deviants, another alien race who look reptilian in nature.
As the story goes, the Eternals have been active on Earth since 5,000 BC. Given this ancient arrival & the fact that the Eternals are immortal, much of human folklore is inspired by their actions. One thing that may save Eternals from being a total flop is its cast of characters.
Meet the Eternals
The Eternals are led by Ajak (Salma Hayek), who has the power to heal any injury. Perhaps the most prolific Eternal is Sersi (Gemma Chan), an empathetic scientist who has the ability to turn matter into dust. One memorable moment of humor in Eternals comes from the character of Ikaris (Richard Madden). Because Ikaris wears a blue suit, can fly, and can shoot lasers out of his eyes, people often mistake him for Superman.
Angelina Jolie stars as Thena, a sullen fighter who does not add much substance to the film whatsoever. One actor who was a surprise entry into the film is comedian Kumail Nanjiani. Nanjiani made a name for himself with his deadpan delivery on shows like Portlandia & Silicon Valley. However, Kumail exercised constantly to prepare for his role as Kingo in Eternals.
Despite Nanjiani’s physical effort, Zhao’s film does not contain a single shot that shows Kumail’s transformed physique. Perhaps he feels as though it was all for not. The Eternals cast also includes Barry Keoghan as Druig, who fails to use his mind control powers to stop wars between humans.
On a groundbreaking level, Brian Tyree Henry stars as Phastos, the first openly gay character in the MCU. Despite these attempts to be different from other Marvel movies, Eternals comes out feeling sort of flat. Be that as it may, here’s how you can watch the film online.
How to watch Eternals for free
Some may be surprised to find out that they can’t watch Eternals online with a Disney+ subscription. While the film may eventually be available, Disney seems to be banking on the fact that people want to see it in theaters instead of online.
