Spider-Man: No Way Home is the latest entry in Marvel’s Spider-Man series, but this time around it seems to be about way more than our friendly neighborhood web-slinger.
The highly anticipated installment of Tom Holland’s web-slinging trilogy is rumored to introduce the multiverse to the MCU.
Marvel released the first trailer for the new movie at the end of August, giving fans a preview of the movie’s multiverse full of villains. But even after the trailer we still have plenty of questions about Marvel’s last movie of 2021.
The earliest hints of the multiverse arrived in the post-credits scene of Spider-Man: Far From Home, when J.K. Simmons reprised his role as J. Jonah Jameson, which he played in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man franchise and in the Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon series. In the post-credits scene, Jameson hosts a talk show where he reveals the identity of Spider-Man as Peter Parker. Now, in the wake of Loki, we know that multiple timelines and realities exist within the framework of the MCU.
When will No Way Home be released?
Spider-Man: No Way Home will hit theaters on Friday, December 17, 2021. Tickets go on sale on Nov. 29, Cyber (or “Spider”) Monday. The film is currently set for an exclusive run in theaters. U.K. audiences will get the web-slinger a couple of days early, as Digital Spy has confirmed that Spider-Man: No Way Home will premiere on Dec. 15 in the U.K.
It’s still unclear if the film will also end up streaming soon, considering the ongoing pandemic, but it likely won’t be on Disney+ for a while. Most other Spider-Man films aren’t on the platform, given Disney and Sony’s deal over the franchise, but a recent agreement between the two studios will make Holland’s Spidey films available to stream on Disney+ starting in 2022.
When will we see a trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home?
Spider-Man No Way Home plot theories
As is typical for an MCU movie, plot details are few and far between right now, although there is heavy fan speculation that we could get a live-action Spider-Verse storyline in this third outing.
The return of Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus, Jamie Foxx’s Electro, and Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange very much fuelled this fan theory, with the trailer later revealing that the Sorcerer Supreme would indeed be guiding Peter Parker through the multiverse.
Speaking about how Doctor Octopus would be able to return despite his death in Spider-Man 2, Molina explained that he was told by director Jon Watts, “In this universe, no one really dies” and that his storyline would pick up from his drowning in the East River at the end of the 2004 film.
Both Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire have been associated with this blockbuster sequel too, but they remain unconfirmed at the time of writing and Holland has also denied their involvement.
How will ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ impact the MCU?
Ever since he debuted in the MCU in Captain America: Civil War, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man has been one of the most popular characters. Now, with Robert Downey Jr.,
Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, and Chadwick Boseman out of the MCU, Holland’s Spider-Man will probably take up a bigger part of the mantle.
Spider-Man: Far From Home officially closed out Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, while Spider-Man: No Way Home will be the fourth film on Phase Four (Black Widow, Shang-Chi, and The Legend of the Ten Rings and Eternals).
Of course, Marvel movies aren’t the only thing contributing to the overall MCU storyline anymore, the Disney Plus originals will also likely factor in at some point, most notably Loki’s storyline of the impending multiverse war. No Way Home will at least dabble in the multiverse, if not take place fully after the events of Loki.
The multiverse storyline will definitely factor into the larger storyline that Marvel is laying out for Phase Four, which we can expect will eventually lead to the next Avengers team-up movie (though that is not dated as of yet). The inclusion of Doctor Strange in the film could also point him in the direction of where his next movie, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, is going.
Will Daredevil appear in Spider-Man: No Way Home?
It has long been rumored that Charlie Cox’s crime-fighting lawyer Daredevil could finally make the jump from Netflix to the big screen in Spider-Man: No Way Home – but we’re still agonizingly waiting for confirmation.
Back in April 2020, Cox responded to early speculation of his involvement with a firm rebuttal, even suggesting that Marvel could be recasting the role with another actor (via Comic Book).
However, in December 2020, fresh reports emerged that Cox would appear in No Way Home, accompanied by a flurry of all-new rumors that he could be in the running for a Disney Plus appearance.
The topic came up once again in February 2021, when Sony Pictures released a casting call for actors to appear in a courtroom scene in the upcoming blockbuster. Fans wasted no time connecting this to the hopeful return of the MCU’s most prolific practicing lawyer: Matt Murdock.
The trailer included a shot of a man dumping some paperwork in front of Peter during his questioning – and while the man’s face was not revealed, this did not stop fans speculating whether this could be Cox’s Murdock.
