Marvel Studios’ upcoming film Eternals is currently in the spotlight and is receiving all the right kinds of buzz. The promotions are at their peak and the hype for the film is immeasurable. To add to it, the cast and crew of the film stepped out in their finest to attend the red carpet premiere in Los Angeles on Monday night.
The first Marvel film of the Oscar-award-winning director Chloé Zhao, Eternals is expected for a theatrical release on November 5, 2021, and there seem to be no plans for the movie coming out on Disney Plus.
Who are the Eternals and what the movie is about
The Eternals are immortal superhumans created by the celestial cosmic gods. For more than 7 thousand years, the Eternals secretly lived on Earth and protected humanity from the Deviants and only from them.
Eternals are forbidden to intervene in situations not related to Deviants. That is why they did not appear in the last “Avengers” and did not help them stop Thanos.
According to the plot of the film, ten Eternals live on Earth, scattered throughout the planet. In seven days, they must gather and save humanity from the attack of an ominous race – a wave of strange earthquakes swept across the Earth, and one of the Deviants suddenly appeared in the center of London.
Marvel’s Eternals plot: what do we know about the story?
As the movie’s official synopsis reveals: “Marvel Studios’ The Eternals features an exciting new team of Super-Heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, ancient aliens who have been living on Earth in secret for thousands of years.
Following the events of Avengers: Endgame, an unexpected tragedy forces them out of the shadows to reunite against mankind’s most ancient enemy, The Deviants”.
Little is known about the movie’s plot in public circles, apart from the fact that it’ll span 7,000 years of humanity’s history (per Entertainment Weekly). The Eternals arrive on Earth via their spaceship, aka the Domo, and viewers may be wondering how (and why) they end up here in the first place.
That, and much more, is revealed as the film plays out, including showing viewers how the MCU looked before “anyone was born”, as Zhao recently told Total Film. So there will be sequences that show the Celestials in greater detail, or how the universe was formed, with Zhao stating that “anything involving the Celestials is going to be at a huge scale level of complication, let’s put it that way.”
Eternals review
Eternals, the latest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has an ambitious goal. The film aims to reveal new events in the MCU that no one knew took place over thousands of years. It’s a complicated task, involving multiple zigzags through time, a huge cast, and plenty of info-dumps. Unfortunately, the whole package doesn’t quite work.
The Eternals, we discover, are superheroes who lived on Earth throughout the entire saga of the Marvel films, arriving millenniums before Captain America was even born.

Why has it been banned in some countries?
Eternals has been pulled from showing in the Gulf region of Saudia Arabia, Kuwait, and Qatar in an apparent ban.
It’s understood that the film, which had been slated for release in the region on 11 November, had been met with a number of edit requests by local censors – edits that Disney was not willing to make, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The news outlet states that sources suggest that the requested edits were in regards to a same-sex couple in the film. In one scene, Phaistos (Brian Tyree Henry) kisses his husband Ben (Haaz Sleiman).
Homosexuality continues to be officially illegal across the Gulf, and it’s standard for films containing any LGBTQ+ content to be pulled from release.
It is still listed as a title that’s “coming soon” in the United Arab Emirates. Director Zhao recently spoke about her hopes that no scenes would need to be changed to appease censors.
Speaking to Indiewire, she said: “I don’t know all the details, but I do believe discussions were had and there’s a big desire from Marvel and myself – we talked about this – to not change the cut of the movie.”
